More LG Windows Phone 7 Devices in Leaks July 8, 2010 No Comments

A recent leak of a Microsoft database designates two LG devices as using a version of Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) Mobile that is made specifically for the Windows Phone 7 mobile platform. This little tidbit of information heavily points that LG is actually making two handsets for the new, upcoming Microsoft OS and not just one.

Korean phone maker LG has already announced the LG Panther early this year. Just a week after the WP7 OS has been revealed at the Mobile World Congress at Barcelona, Spain, the company was already able to show off a mock design of their upcoming Panther smart phone. The device was not only exciting for being the first WP7 device to be leaked in an image, but it is also the first (and currently only) WP7 handset that would actually be using a slide out QWERTY keyboard.

As anyone heavy text messaging user would tell you, not even the best haptic technology can come close to emulating the feel and more importantly, the performance of having a real physical keyboard to type on. And if that lone was not enough to draw in a solid chunk of WP7’s target market, LG is now going for a double whammy with a second device.

Of course, this would be assuming that either the LG E900 or LG C900 is referring to the already known LG Panther. But if the Panther is a completely different device, then it is quite possible that LG will be coming out with three new WP7 devices all in all.

At this point, one for each chassis type sounds like a pretty good plan for the phone maker to take.

Microsoft has already given out the basic tech specs for every WP7 handset. This means that the 1GHz CPU and WVGA touch screens are no longer anything of a surprise. The same goes for the 5 mega pixel camera, GPS and Bluetooth.

LG Bringing in New Devices for 2010 March 15, 2010 1 Comment

Korean manufacturer LG has been taking up quite the spotlight quite a lot these days. Early this year we already got to see a sneak peek at the GW900 supersized smart phone and just recently, reports of the upcoming Panther and Apollo has been stealing the headlines thanks to the announcement that these LG devices will be among the first smart phones to be using the Windows Phone 7 series (unless the device from Asus-Microsoft comes out first).

Now, 5 more devices are added to LG’s 2010 lineup of mobile phones.

First up is the LG Jaguar 5, which, despite sharing a similar naming convention to the Panther (wild cats and all), this device is slated to be a standard candy bar mobile phone. Very few details have been released regarding the Jaguar 5, but it is known that it will come with a VGA camera.

The KS365 is an updated version of the KS360 slide phone. Once again, the device will have that cute looking slide out physical keyboard (yes the one with rounded keys). The phone will have an FM radio, a 2 mega pixel snapper and a 2.4 inch QVGA touch screen display.

The LG Pure is a mid range HSDPA smart phone that will come equipped with a 5 mega pixel camera but apparently, no touch screen display. A modified S-Class user interface has been confirmed for the Pure. A second device in the mid-level smart phone range is the GT405 which will come with another modified s-class user interface, this time a 3D touch version. No word yet on the final specs for the GT405 but it will have a 5 mega pixel camera and an FM radio. The last device in the list is the much talked about LG Cookie Music KM750 smart phone.

LG Panther is Our First Hope for WP7 March 3, 2010 3 Comments

When Steve Ballmer and company announced that the new Windows Phone 7 mobile platform is not due till holidays, plenty of us cringed at the thought of the long wait.

The new OS shown onstage was so incredible and so revolutionary that it made us glance at our Androids and iPhones while thinking “these are so yesterday’s platforms”. The detail and sheer volume of dynamic elements in the demonstration showed off how great WP7’s UI is in terms of handling information and how to arrange it easily for users. The tiles system replaces widgets in terms of customizability and the addition of Zune, Bing and Xbox Live Games to the system certainly helps improve lots of things for the new OS.

Of course, Windows Phone 7 is still far from complete. At the Mobile World Congress, it was obvious that the Office functions still lacked plenty of major programs, no game demos were available and the Marketplace for WP7 was nowhere to be seen. For all purposes, MS succeeded in frustrating us with the possibility of a long wait.

Now, LG has come up with some very surprising news; they have been working on a device for WP7 and reports indicate a potential September release date.

The LG Panther follows the type-2 chassis with the slide out QWERTY keyboard and the traditional touch screen layout on top of the device. Aside from the 5 mega pixel camera with LED flash on the back, there are no other details revealed about the new phone. Speculations have popped out saying that the CPU will be a 1GHz Snapdragon –understandable considering that MS and Qualcomm are working together on the new OS.

In any case, if WP7 is finished early; this could be the very first Windows Phone 7 device to be available.

LG Mini GD880 – Lots of Power, One Tiny Package February 24, 2010 2 Comments

LG Mini GD880 4Another device that has been unveiled to the world at this week’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the LG Mini GD880 certainly caused something of a stir when it was first shown to at the exhibition, and when you get a closer look at the device’s design you begin to appreciate exactly why. Interestingly at an initial cursory glance many of the assembled at Barcelona thought that the phone looked somewhat incomplete, mistakenly believing it to be perhaps a demo product or a showcase item for displaying and exhibiting a new operating system perhaps. Close-up examination, however, revealed that simplicity was the genius behind the device’s design.

LG Mini GD880 camThe Mini GD880 retains the underlying principles of design as seen in previous LG devices such as the Pop GD510 and the standout feature is probably that there is practically no unemployed space between the left and right sides of the screen. This LG concept has been further developed and employed on the Mini and it is, according to LG at least, ‘the smallest phone to come equipped with a 3.2-inch screen.’

The Mini is fairly angular in appearance, certainly more so than the Pop, but it nestles smoothly and comfortably into the hand and has a stylish look with its plastic and metallic blend. The screen itself is capacitive and has a very good high resolution of 480×854 pixels, and whilst it negates to utilise the current craze for AMOLED screen technology the display and colours are still very easy on the eye nonetheless. Another pleasing design fact is that the MicroUSB port along with the MicroSD slot are hidden from view on the device and are concealed and protected by sliding protective flaps which hare very sturdy and fairly unbreakable look. There is also a 3.5 millimetre headphone jack which enables users to immediately plug in whichever pair of earphones they might like.

LG Mini GD880 3As far as performance and functionality are concerned the LG Mini GD880 runs an S-Class interface and does come with some advancements and new implementations that will run well alongside such models as the LG AREAN KM900. The homepage is comprised on three pages rather than four, although the user can choose to place whatever they like on any of the pages, and such things might include Web site shortcuts and widgets along with all of the phone’s functions. The Mini also affords the user ample opportunity to download additional widgets if desired.

The Mini’s main menu is category-divided, and this is fairly generic to LG’s newest devices that also feature touch-sensitive screen. The LG Air Sync Service makes its bow on the Mini as well, though it is still in the testing phase. The service will allow the user the ability to exchange data between their computer and their phone, and LG Mini GD880 1also to store files over the Web on remote servers.  Regardless the SNS function is fairly complete and will be of value to dedicated social networkers as it allows access to both Twitter and Facebook clients in addition to affording full integration of information about a user’s online contacts within social networking sites into the device’s integral phone book. This is great, as it negates any need for repeated manual updating of information.

The browser is also good, and it supports both multi-touch and double-tap controls. It also provides partial Flash support, and users will be able to watch YouTube videos – a nice addition for some who have been less-than-impressed with Apple’s iPhone incarnations.

The integral 5-megapixel camera is fairly standard and nothing particularly special, but it does have video capture (VGA resolution), and also comes equipped with a number of features and options. For example, pictures and clips can be edited after capture, which is a very nice touch indeed. The device seems set to become a hit, although there were a few glitches with the operating speed at the demo which may well be sorted by the time retail release comes around when it could see itself as the ARENA’s true successor.

LG Cookie Accomplishes the 10 Million Sales Mark December 10, 2009 1 Comment

LG CookieRecently LG proudly announced that since its launch in November 2008, their handset LG Cookie KP 500 has crossed the landmark figure of 10 million units in sales. Just five months back, the LG Cookie KP 500 had crossed the 5 million sales mark. LG Cookie KP 500 is not the first LG handset to enjoy the honor. Before the Cookie, LG Chocolate, LG KP 100, LG KG 270 and LG Shine have also crossed sales of more than 10 million units.

Dr. Skott Ahn, who is the President and CEO of the LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company expressed his satisfaction over the achievement of the landmark and attributed the success of the phone to the remarkable design and use interface features of the phone, which he observed corresponded to the demands of the users. He further added that LG would continue to produce models that address the expectations and demands of customers in order to offer a better product experience.

The LG Cookie KP 500 had really been a success across the globe, as per the manufacturers, as the phone had swept markets across the globe. It recorded over 5 million sales only in Europe, while it sold 2 million units each in Asia and South America, with a rate of one million units per month in the current year. LG is still hopeful of an increase in the performance of the handset during this holiday season.

But one of the most pivotal reasons behind the LG handset was its adaptability as per different regional markets. LG emphasized this by giving an example of how the phone had catered to the needs of the market in the Middle East by featuring the Koran recitals and a compass to indicate the direction of Mecca for prayers for the Moslem community. Similarly for the Czech market, they had included an ice-hockey game in the phone with a logo of Sparta Prague, a household name in the country.

With the expected rise in the demand of LG Cookie, LG is expected to announce its successor in the near future, just like they did for LG Chocolate.
