LG GC990 Louvre. Life, death, and cameraphones

A lot of things can happen in a second or two, as you’ll well know. If only our reactions were a couple of seconds quicker for example and we wouldn’t have spilt, well, several hundred drinks over the last decade or so we’ve been drinking in our local pub. Some – the angry landlord, for one – might claim that our spillages are down to nothing more than too many snakebites with tequila chasers. Nonsense, we slur back, there is simply a flaw in our construction, a time lag between us and the rest of the world. And while the landlord might have laughed us off (or, more often, threatened us with extreme violence) we’ve been aware for some time that there’s something else that shares our pain: cameraphones.

Because you must all have experienced this annoyance too: someone is about to or is already doing something funny / amazing / fatal, so you scrabble for the phone, leap into camera-mode with the touch of a button, line-up the laughing / crying / dying subject and hit the shutter button. Then keep on hitting it. Then press even harder. Then press some more, and even more, until you can feel the bone of your finger grinding slightly against the phones feeble plastic body, and then, just after the crucial moment when the subject of your desperate attention falls over / falls over / dies, the picture takes. And you curse and you curse, even as the ambulance takes your friend away, because you’ve missed another picture.

Not so, so they claim, with the recently announced LG Louvre. And why is that, you ask? Because the LG Louvre GC990 features – along with its 12 megapixels, HD video recording and impressive little Schneider Kreuznach lens – something called… wait for it… Zero shutter Lag. Which, as the minority of you out there who can read past a primary school level will know, means that the shutter, when pressed, will have no lag time before taking the picture. Hurrah, we say. Sadly, the phone is barely out of its concept nappies. So there’s nothing more to say except have a gander at these current LG mobile phones, or at this LG Louvre review instead.

The LG GT505. Spot the difference?

Features of the LG GT505 include:
- 3″ full touchscreen
- GPS
- Push email via Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync
- Wi-Fi (TM)
- HSDPA 3.6
- 3G enabled
- Voice activation
- 5-megapixel camera

Which is all well and good. But, being ever so slightly more intelligent than, say, stones, or goldfish, we realised that there was something a little similar about this. So we dug deep into our archives, hired teams of private detectives, and finally came across the blog post we wrote a staggering week or so ago about the LG GT500, whose features include:

- 3″ full touchscreen
- GPS
- Push email via Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync
- Wi-Fi (TM)
- HSDPA 3.6
- 3G enabled
- Voice activation
- 5-megapixel camera

And even after hiring more detectives and even holding the two phones up against each other and squinting, we’re still stumped about what’s different about the LG GT505. There’s a cynical voice in us that says LG’s just given the GT505 a different name so it can offer it EXCLUSIVELY to Orange to peddle to their customers, whilst the LG GT500 has been promised EXCLUSIVELY to T-Mobile followers. LG GW520. Not for old people.

Call us old fashioned, but we think things were better in t’olden days. Way back in the early 2000’s, for example. When you had a screechy dial-up internet connection. And you checked your emails one or twice a day, never found pictures of yourself throwing up through your nose online in public view (unless you were famous and/or naked as well, that is), and if anyone had used the phrase social networking you would have thought it was something very people did when they played polo.

Now, with the future very much here, the kids want something different. Not satisfied with updating their Facebook status every 4 minutes (I’m on a bus! Don’t know where I’m going!) and checking, sending, forwarding and bouncing emails left right and centre, the kids need more. And the LG GW520 is giving ‘em just want they want by being just about the first mid-range (i.e. pretty cheap, considering) phone to offer ‘push’ services. That means the GW520 can be set-up not only to allow you to check to see if you have new emails or relevant status updates, but to actually alert you whenever that happens. Sounds like a version of hell to us (especially if it’s set to do some kind of annoying beeping ping every time an email arrives) but we’ve no doubt there’s going to be a whole lot of probably younger than us folk out there who are going to find this – not to mention the large slide-out QWERTY keyboard on this thing – very useful indeed. LG Puccini (LG GT500). Middleweight champion

The LG GT500 Puccini: a phone named after the renowned composer of Madame Butterfly fly… gotta be a music phone, right? Well, not in the world of mobile phones where’s names are plucked from god knows where and more often than not have less meaning, relevance or impressiveness than your average Big Brother contestant. But let’s not get too negative as this isn’t a bad phone at all. It’s not going to set the world on fire, but then LG aren’t pretending it will. And chances are the LG GT500 Puccini (released very soon on T-Mobile only) is going to be a more than affordable little number, especially considering some of the things it’s boasting.

ultrafast EDGE technology so you can surf and download at close-to broadband speeds
HSDPA networking
Integrated GPS receiver
Bluetooth and USB connections
Comprehensive email support
Wide variety of different media formats catered for

So, the LG GT500 Puccini is no lightweight for sure. Well, except in the fact that as well as packing a decent punch in the specs department, it is also a pretty light, slim and kinda attractive little creature. At just 12mm thick and weighing in at a featherweight 86 grams, this is definitely going to be a pocket and palm-friendly addition to your life. So don’t expect to be knocked out by this thing, but we reck that if you get into the ring with it, you’ll be going a fair few rounds with a nifty little crowd pleaser.
